It's 5:30
p.m. when I walk into Sylvia Freya Fockler's office - "kidney time," she
says.
The West Vancouver-based Jin Shin Do® Bodymind Acupressure™
practitioner explains that late afternoon is when the kidneys need most
attention, just as the liver is most active between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Jin Shin Do® translates as "the way of the compassionate spirit," and its
practice is a combination of hands-on and mental relaxation
techniques.
All sessions take place with the client fully clothed and lying on their
back, as Fockler determines the most sensitive areas based on the
strongest "pulses."
The pressure applied to key points on the body relate to what Fockler
refers to as "the strange flows," which run along the body's 12 organ
meridians and, when released, moderate energy in the body.
By pressing on one of 45 key trigger points in tandem, Fockler helps free
blocked energy.
Jin Shin Do® was developed by American psychotherapist Iona Marsaa
Teeguarden, who Fockler trained with. It melds acupressure with
body-focusing techniques, and as such can help clients process troubling
emotions.
Fockler has clients identify comfortable spaces in their body and
visualize images, like their favourite colour, as a means of fostering
deep relaxation.
Among the physical maladies Jin Shin Do® can help are back pain, headaches,
high blood pressure, and anxiety. It also helps boost the immune system.
Fockler has been practising Jin Shin Do® in West Vancouver since 1996, and
is also a Jin Shin Do® instructor. She says she values the self-awareness
the technique gives her and the individualized sessions she is able to
provide.
"This kind of work," she says, "allows me to help people more fully accept
themselves, their feelings and life experiences, and their bodies
remembering and expressing their feelings, for who they really are, with
all their challenges and strengths. This in turn allows me to be fully who
I am."
Fockler is teaching an introductory Jin Shin Do® workshop in West Vancouver at 7 p.m. March 20. To register for the course or to find out more, contact Sylvia.
